First iPad Repaired

Image
iPad Repair??? Yes, I have repaired my first iPad First Gen this week. After repairing iPhones for the last year, it was only a matter of time before someone would ask me to repair their iPad even after I warned them I had never repaired one before. The iPad owner was my boss' friend who I had previously repaired his 3GS' Digitizer. He (or should I say a family member) had packed the iPad in their cosmetic bag and one of the cream bottle had leaked. The iPad was still working but would no longer charge. Cracking it open was a bit of a challenge and very similar to opening an iPod. There are 14 small metal clips around 3 of the sides. I managed to break 10 of them... Thankfully those clips are replaceable. Once open, we quickly realized that the cream had seeped in near the dock connector. I remove the dock connector assembly and Craig (my boss' brother who was assisting with the repair) cleaned it with "White Gas". This is the stuff used in Coleman Stoves. I w...

Water Damaged iPhone 4 Revived

Image
Water Damaged iPhone 4 Revived I had an interesting service call last week. A new customer called me after his iPhone 4 had entered a hot tub and was no longer turning on. The phone would get as far as the plug into iTunes screen when connected to a wall outlet but the second you unplugged it, it would die. Hooking it up to a computer was not providing enough power for it so it would not even turn on. In a last effort to troubleshoot the issue, which I thought was a lost cause, I replaced the phone's battery. To my surprise, the phone turned on. I was still very skeptical that all components would still be functional but yes, they were. We poked around and the WiFi, Bluetooth, speakers, proximity sensors and microphones were all working. The phone, except for its battery had survived the plunge. Note: As a lot of online post suggest, the owner of the phone had placed his phone into rice for a few days before calling me to help rescue his it. The water that ...

Belkin FM Dock breaking iPhones

Image
TuneBase FM with Hands-Free power surge iPhones I've had a few clients over the past few months that had their iPhone (3G or 3GS) refuse to turn ON after what they described as their Belkin FM Dock frying their iPhones. Luckily there is a quick and easy fix for you. By removing the motherboard off of the battery and preventing any current from getting to the motherboard, it seams to reset the phone and fix the issue.  Of course you might not want to perform this on your own as it is somewhat of a delicate procedure but feel free to get in touch with me and I'll assist you with the procedure.

iOS 4.3 is here early. Apple had announced last week at the iPad 2 reveal that the iOS Version 4.3 would be available on Friday the 11th but it is 10:44pm pacific time and I have just discovered that it is available... Downloading... The file is 669 MB. Let's hope I'll be up and running on iOS 4.3 before 11pm. Can wait to play with some of the new features. I know the wifi hotspot has been a heavily requested one. This will make a lot of iPad owner very happy as they can cut the cord on their iPad 3G bill. Thanks Apple for under promising and over delivering...

iTunes Error 13019 - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!

Image
I had a bit of an issue with my iPhone 4 today where it decided to error out after it looked like it was all done syncing. The error number in iTunes was 13019. I Googled the issue and found this article in apple's knowledge base.  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2830 Well after a few hours of troubleshooting and following the article's suggestion I called Apple. The technicians were very nice and helpful as usual and proceeded to tell me to uninstall and reinstall iTunes following these directions:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923  and asked me to call back if it does not solve the issue and they would send me a new phone. After no success with the iTunes uninstall and reinstall I decided to look online again. I ended up finding another post identical to the first one on this site:  http://www.errorbank.com/apple/itunes/how-can-i-fix-the-itunes-error-13019-when-i-sync/ I noticed that I had skipped a crucial step, both articles stated that I should "...

Freezing a hard drive for data recovery

Have you ever thought that freezing your hard drive might be a viable option for data recovery? I had heard idea before and read posts suggesting that it was NOT a myth and that it can help in some situations. After trying a few tricks that have help me in the past like Ghosting or unsing a Linux Live CD, I was about to give up on a coworker's 1 year old iMac that would not boot anymore. The guys at the Apple Store (Actually Simply Computing) were unable to recover any of the data and returned the hard drive. After the few tries on windows, Linux and other Mac systems, but the drive would not let itself be recognize by any of the systems. I decided to place the drive in the freezer for about 1 to 2 hour and booted my Ubuntu CD again. The drive was actually recognize this time and Ubuntu was able to browse it. Unfortunately, Ubuntu respected some of the security Mac OS had place in some of the user's folders and I was unable to get the data out of those folders but was succe...

iPhone 4 in Canada

Well, only 12 Days until Canada and a few other countries get their change to purchase the iPhone 4. I know about all the bad press the antenna has been getting but it will not slow me down, there are enough other features and improvement to make it worth the upgrade. I guess will find out real soon if the issues are partly related to AT&T. See you on the other side.
